Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking allows the busy teacher to save their favourite websites onto the internet so the teacher can access and save favourite websites from school or home. Instead of being reliant on the bookmarks saved in your browser you can access favourites by logging onto your social bookmarking site and search quickly and easily for that favourite website.

Most social bookmarking sites have a feature that downloads a toolbar into your browser so you can save a bookmark by clicking the tag button. This means as soon as you come accross a website that you wish to save all you have to do is click the tag button and then assign a tag (label) to the site. The tag system allows you to save your websites into categories.

You are given the option of sharing your bookmarks with others or saving them privately. You are able to read other peoples bookmarks and you are given the option of sharing your own bookmarks.
Students in an inquiry group could share bookmarks amongst themselves during an inquiry.

It pays to occaisionally download your links into your browser in case the social bookmarking site ceases to exist. I used to belong to Furl but it was bought out and ceased to exist: but it did give lots of warning to download the bookmarks and transfer into another service.

The most popular bookmarking site is Delicious (suggestion: use Delicious as it has a large user base and is likely to be around for some time)
    1. Oganise your bookmarks as tags
    2. Share bookmarks with friends
    3. Search people/experts to share their bookmarks
    4. Download the toolbar for your school and home browser

Other social bookmarking sites include:
  • Diigo Similar to Delicious where you can annotate, archive and organise your bookmarks but not so popular.
  • Reddit Online bookmarking
  • StumbleUpon Online bookmarking
  • Digg Online Bookmarking
  • Twine Bookmarking with a difference
  • Discover information that matters to you
